To run or not to run?

Running is something I love the idea of doing, but the reality of running longer distances makes me shudder. I picture myself like a gazelle running swiftly through the city streets, but the truth is my running style is a bit more sloth like. I long for the grace and beauty of a “true” runner, but the reality is I worry the effort that will go into it may not be worth the reward.
All that being said, I feel I must conquer my sloth like imagery and become the gazelle I know I can be. This challenge is not just about going the distance. It is about running efficiently, injury FREE and feeling like you have moved your body to a new level of conditioning.
In order to do that I have compiled a list of suggestions based on my research on how to stay in a positive running state of mind.
  1. Eat right by fueling your body correctly. Try snacking on oatmeal, bananas, fruit and nuts, granola or energy bars to boost your energy before you head out for a run.
  2. Stay hydrated all day and every day. Plus, adequate water with you on your run.
  3. Have a training plan and schedule into your life.
  4. Change your scenery by getting off the treadmill and heading down to the water’s edge or a jaunt through the city streets. Use Google Maps to plot your route and distance beforehand.
  5. Get the right shoes for your feet by speaking to an in store expert.
  6. Weight Train and Cross Train to get your body in better overall condition. Improved conditioning via weight lifting allows you to improve your strength and prevent injuries.
  7. Rest is critical to your recovery and your injury prevention efforts so don't ignore rest days.
Bottom line is that by dedicating about an hour a day I can conquer the running demon to go from a wobbly sloth to graceful gazelle in a few weeks. I’m in! Who’s with me?
